| I've found Fayette to be a good lake...not that I, personally, ever caught
much there. But, that's just me. I'm going to try Gibbons Creek ( about the
same distance as Fayette County Lake for me) some time over the next week or
so. Both lakes are 70+ miles from my house in far North Houston...and through
some city, or at least town, traffic. I'm thinking more like 2 hours,
considering both are down some side roads a bit. My location lends itself to
the Northern-most lake (Gibbons Creek) as opposed to Fayette. That
preference is ONLY because of city traffic from my place. Conroe is one hour north of me. It is often spoken of as the most difficult
lake in TX to catch bass on. I've had good days and bad days there. The bad
days FAR outnumber the good ones...but...again..that's just me.
I've been tempted to use a guide to see if they can do any better...but the
only one I spoke to wasn't very positive about our being able to get the
bass to bite. Crappie and catfish, all day long, I guess...but not LM bass. I'll keep your email address around and, when I get back from Gibbons, I'll
post you about my results. If you DO engage Judy Wong ( who I've heard good
things about)...and want to split the guide's fee for a day, I might join
you. Lake Houston is almost "in town" but I've only heard catfish reports from
there.
Clear Lake is all salt-water, and almost "in-town". It could be very good by
April, if you would want to try specks ( speckled sea trout ) and reds (
redfish or red drum). I'm having zero luck with saltwater this Winter. Just
got back from a 140 mile drive to West Galveston Bay, with nothing but some
wind-burn to show for the day. I guess I better get back up to Wisconsin..where the fish don't yet know my
reputation for not catching enough on my outings.
