TARGET???
Shopping at TARGET with the family I strolled into the sporting goods dept.
only to find
Rapala Husky Jerk baits for $2.98 in all sizes and colors.
Ten new jerkbaits under $35 is a deal, check it out if you are near one of
their stores. |

| I have seen an occassional decent Bait in Target, but its mostly cheap
stuff. Some of the drugs stores like Rite-Aid will also have an occassioanl
gem. I found a bunch of Kinami stick worms in one in colors I liked for
lower prices event han Wally World. I bought them all, but they haven't
gotten anymore in. I like to walk through the sporting goods section in any
store just to see what they have. One that used to be really cool was
Yellow Front / Checker Auto stores. Western Auto can be a surprise from
time to time, and any True Value Hardware store in an area with fishing can
be a pleasant surprise.

| Yes Bob,the other stuff was mostly crap but I jumped on the Rapala deal.I
also found quite a selection of baits at pretty good prices at the Army-Navy
Surplus store in Nashville, and was surprised at the amount of inventory of
rods and reels they had.
I just hope the wife doesn't think I am ALWAYS ready to go shopping with
her now! |

| two years back I went into a new "Big Lots " just to see what they had.I
found a little sporting goods corner that had a bunch of really low end rod
and reel combos.
looking through the lures I found a partial case of Norman crankbaites in
every size, color , running depth you could ever think about. They were dirty
and dusty but top quality .I scooped up the case and asked a stockboy what
the price was. 50 cents a lure if I take them all.I agreed. we counted 38
lures .I get to the register to check out and open my wallet only to find
that I have a total of three dollars and change on me.I ask the sales lady
to hold them for me while I go to my truck to scavenge up some money .I
finally scrape up the money and head back in just as some dip sh*&(%$^T that
was two places behind me in line comes out with my lures smiling like a
opossum eating sh&^$%&*.I look in at the sales lady and she just looks out
at me grinning. That is my luck

| You're lucky, the last Target store I was in, I had more "sporting goods" in
my boat than they had on all the shelves...... |

| Same here. Maybe that's related to how much competition there is in the
vicinity of the Target store. The one I used to shop at dropped all fishing
tackle quite a while back.

| I think Target and a lot of others like that just buy closeouts and "deals."

| True Steve, the only other things they had were some inline spinners and a
few Booyah spinnerbaits. |

| Another deal! Went to Wally-world today and saw a shopping cart in front of
the store crammed with rods at "clearance price". I picked up a Falcon 6'6''
medium heavy worm rod for $30.They had several Team Daiwa rods at low
prices.Heck,I didn't even know they carried that kind of stuff.
Maybe Al is on to something?????????? Nahhhhhhh. :) |

can answer in the affirmative. |

| The Wal Mart here has a pretty good selection of quality gear....I
browse through there often, and the prices seem more than competitive to
me. But I don't buy much, the kid does right by me <grin>. He has his
own line of signature lures out now, so I reckon I will be trying some
other things besides my trusty plastics this year :). JK |

| I went back there ths afternoon and the sporting goods mgr. was setting up
the "spring fishing display".He told me to come back in the morning and the
whole display would be ready.
He had already set up the hook section and all the Gammys were $2 a pack in
all sizes,ZOOM worms were $2,and he said all the other stuff he was yet to
set up would be really marked down.
Oh,all the rods that were there this morning were gone, looks like lots of
folks got a deal.
This particulat Wal-Mart has a pretty good selection.I guess because it's so
close to the lake and there are so many (way too many) tournaments here.
I will be back there in the morning to pick up a whole lot of stuff my waife
says I DO NOT need.
Whats she know,she can't even use a baitcaster. |

| Wally World is market sensitive. I notice Wallys in fly fishing country
have a lot better selection of flies, and flyfishing products.

Me too Warren :). The WON Miller High Life pro tour that he now fishes
has went to a different format, and I think John is going to start
fishing the Everstart soon....maybe after that, we will see him in
something east of the Mississippi. He took 2nd in the San Diego regional
ABA saturday ( .3 lb out of first)...that's a 1st and 2nd in his last
two tournaments. He is devoting some time to his lure thing, and local
promos, so he's keeping busy. John
