Well, yes and no. While I think that red hooks are somewhat of a marketing ploy, they still catch fish. It certainly isn't going to hurt a lure's chances of being struck by having red hooks, and under certain circumstances, it might even improve them. The fact of the matter is a hook is a hook is a hook, regardless of color.

I use red hooks on occasion, and while I don't see my catch rate increasing dramatically, I don't see it going down either. I'll buy red hooks if I have to replace some on a crankbait, or if there's a sale on them somewhere. Will I go buy enough to replace all the hooks in my boxes? NO!

I have exclusively gone to red hooks, maybe there is a difference in the water that you fish. I experimented with them at the beggining of last season. I fished with them and without them and with the amount of time I put in on the water last year, I noticed i caught a lot more fish with the red hooks. maybe it's just a confidence thing, who knows. I do think that when wacky rigging soft stick baits like Senkos that maybe that flash of red looks like a gill on a bait fish, same thing when fishing flukes, i don't think it's as much a dying or injured fish thing as everyone claims is the reason, but again it's just my opinion. I like them and have no problem fishing them all the time, besides the gammy EWG red hooks are about 20 cents a pack cheaper at the local Wal mart as compared to the regular gammy WG's Alwaysfishking

Randy, I have been sitting here watching all the posts on red hooks and I have to agree with you. When I switched last season I noticed an increase. I thought it might just be my imagination but...

I have gone to all red hooks except on crank and stick. I may change one on each this season.

I tested red hooks while spider rigging for crappie. I used a double hook rig on each pole with a red hook and a gold hook on each pole. Some poles had the red on the top and some had it on the bottom. They were baited with live minnows and I had 4 poles in the water. I could tell no difference in the catch rate of the hooks. Maybe it's just a Bass thing.

My approach exactly Steve. As I replace trebles on crankbaits, jerkbaits, and top water toothpicks, I definitley try to put at least one red hook somewhere on them if I have the correct hook size in my red collection. I have also had some luck in using a red trailer hook on some spinnerbaits. I also have taken to T and C rigging plastics with red hooks, but, I won't buy a red hook to replace every hook in my bag "just because they're red". Doesn't make sense to do so IMHO. Can't say that they've increased my strike or hookup rate, but like you, I can't say that it's hurt either. SimRacer

I have been told fish cant see the color red by more than one person. Has anyone else heard this? Kevin
