I have used a 27 lb thrust minnkota for 5 seasons. Works well. I get my
batteries at WalMart. If I am right, more thrust doesnt translate into more top speed. That has
to do with the shape of both your hull and the propeller. One of the best things about a trolling motor on a canoe is that you can use
it to hold position easily, even in a wind. Good Luck
