Bow Mount Dimensions?
I'm considering getting a bow mount trolling motor for my jon boat (14ft
Lowe lake jon) and planning to make a platform to mount the motor. I have
looked at the Minn Kota website and haven't found any information on the bow
mounts themselves. I need to know how big the trolling motor mounting
platform needs to be.Also, the motor I'm considering is the Power Drive 40lb thrust from Wal Mart
for $311.XX. I like the Power Drive because of the ability to use the
remote control and the auto pilot. I saw a review on a Minn Kota Power
Drive motor and the guy had multiple problems with it within the first year.
Anybody use a Minn Kota PD motor and have recommendations? Or any
recommendations on a different motor? Thanks! |

| The platform on my Waco is 5 1/2 by 27 1/2. The wdith is about perfect,
but it is longer than I really need. I am running a Minn Kota All Terrain
on it. I think the Power drive has a smaller mounting base, but you also
want to consider making sure you get the motor far enough back when it in
the stowed position so it doesn't hit the back of your truck when
trailering. Also, I think it puts more strain on the hardware bouncing up
and down if you mount it hanging to far off the front of the boat. I bought
the Waco with a trolling motor mount. It is along the side. I think if I
had built my own platform I would have set it up at an angle so that the
motor dropped down in the exact center of the front of the boat. It would
take slightly away from the front deck space, but It was a little tricky
getting all the control tricks worked out with it on one side. I also think
force would be more efficiently applied with the motor in the center pulling
the boat directly behind. One other thing to consider is where you are
going to be fishing. If you fight a current, or deal with really windy
conditions the motor you are looking at may not be big enough. I have a
65LB on my 16' Jon and it is barely adequate when pulling the current in the
river. I have no feed back on the Power Drive units. I have been considering using
one as fighting a current with the motor on or near the highest setting with
a push pull cable system takes a lot of effort and definitely takes away
from my fishing even with properly adjusted cables. Negative feedback on
the units is the only thing that has kept me from more seriously considering
one. |

| I had a MK Power Drive when they first came out, I was a total piece of
junk, I had major problems with the shaft not turning to steer..also it
was hard to mount a trolling motor transducer on and a pain to pick up
in shallow water or to stow..I thought it was going to be great but not

| I have a MK 65# autopilot on my boat. Runs great, until low battery on
autopilot mode. I have a removable mount. Got it from Cabelas. I think it
is not the MK made one. |

| My MK Power Drive was not a auto pilot.I was real careful with mine but
I just didn't have much luck.. with a 12 ft jonboat I am now using a bow
mounted foot controlled Motor Guide which I have modified for stick
steering..works pretty and the modification is easy. |
