Still No bass

Ok so I have been out twice on the puddle jumper for a few hours each time, both times cold and windy. No takers, I went bank fishing for those "Gotta run to the store" 15 minute fishing trips, no fish not even a toothy critter, Thrown jigs, spinnerbaits, carolina rigs, senkos, grubs on jigheads, toads, worms and drop shotted a bit. Nothing.!!!!

Randy,

This probably won't make you feel any better, but I only have 3 in 2 trips. We probably have similar water conditions right now, and I am fishing all the wood on the North, Northwest shores I can.

I kept doing it, backing off further and further, went out tonight for 3 hours, dragging carolina rigged brush hogs and flukes with no takers, spinner baits, senkos, tubes, jigs and drop shotted some robo worms in about 20 feet of water, just could not find a fish, located some baitfish getting busted on but turns out it was just some toothy critters, they followed the spinnerbaits, but wouldn't hit them, cold and windy again, air temp was 51 degrees. I gotta get this first fish thing over with, on another note, I took some pictures of the point on the lake that they flattened out. I'll post them later on ABPF, what potential that spot will have this summer, can't wait alwaysfishking

I may know the problem Randy. I wouldn't try a single one of the lures that you've thrown.

There are a few things you might try-

1) A beefy, suspending (or sinking) jerkbait. I like the Rapala Husky Jerk, size 14 (I think). Three trebles, about 5" in length. Tennessee shad color with orange belly. Steve Daniel told me it's the only jerkbait he throws. Me too now. Don't let the name fool you - you don't "jerk" the lure at all, except to get it down right after the cast. Then you let it sit, motionless, for up to 10 seconds. Then *slowly* sweep the bait with your rod, just a foot or two. repeat the sweep/pause thing as long as it takes (or until you can't stand it anymore). If you're around fish they'll eat the bait, period. In the frigid water they won't chase, and this presents a large prey object that appears to be dying. This is common in shad right after ice-out.

2) I love pulling & dropping a Silver Buddy along the bottom. Work the bait just like you would a t-rigged plastic worm. Lift it off the bottom & let it sink on a semi-slack line. Bass whale this lure in cold water, I'm not sure why but I think it may have the same dying-shad appeal as the jerkbait.

3) Believe it or not I've done well ripping a Rattletrap in water in the 40's. Yup, ripping it. I'd try the above two baits first though.

I've heard rumors of bass eating Senkos in the coldwater, but I personally haven't seen it yet.

They're generally in 8-15 feet of water before they really come up, so slow-sinking lures don't do it for me in early pre-spawn.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice Warren, probably the one thing I haven't thrown was a jerkbait and I have a bunch, smithwick rogues, rapalas etc. I used to throw them a lot, Don't know why I didn't think of it. I saw Mike Ike fishing hard jerkbaits on TV the same way you described and I did fairly well with the Yozuri twitching minnows in Blk/Gold using that method, the bass would crush it right after the sweep, and I mean crush, as I usually had to get all the treble hooks out of their mouths. I remember you telling me about the rattle traps two years ago in a different post. Blue Back chrome right? I just purchased a bunch of Strike King Diamond Shads as I prefere them to the Bill Lewis type. I threw them yesterday too but no success, I wish you were going to the MTC so I could take advantage of that fish brain of yours a little more. Rest assured, I'll keep plugging away. Thanks again alwaysfishking
