Jigs in weedy lakes
I live in MA and my go to lure is a Senko. I decided to ad some jigs to the
tackle box with crwafish looking trailers. I like the lure and think I
could catch fish with it, but I'm constantlt down in the weeds. Are these things designed for rocky bottoms only? |

| Jigs designed for use IN the weeds have the line tie at the extreme
front of the head and have a cone or triangular shaped head to minimize
the front surface area. In heavy milfoil and pads like you commonly have
in MA, (I'm in CT, so fish similar conditions much of the time) you're
pretty much limited to pitching and/or flipping to holes or openings in
the surface mat, and either fishing the initial drop only or employing
very short retrieves. But almost any head design will work along the outside edge of the
veggies, which is the pivot point for bass movements in natural lakes. |

Like Rich said in really heavy cover you will pretty much be limited to
pinpoint pitching to targets with a jig, but some grass jigs will amaze you
what you can pull them through, especially when tied onto a good braid that
can cut stuff when snapped hard through it. Bob La Londe

| So are they worth the effort in weedy lakes? I'd just as soon hang a Senko
on the end of the line. |

| Yes. A senko is a wonderful bait, but a jig falls and fishes differently.
It pays to have a different bait you can fish, and you can fish a jig in
weeds. When senkos quit working for me I start throwing jigs myself. |
