Fishfinders...

....suppose you had about 200 bucks to spend on a fishfinder. Which would you get and why? I've been looking at the BPS and Cabela's catalogs, and have found that the variety is bewildering. I'm not really looking for bells and whistles -- just something that shows depth, structure, and FISH!

Thanks, Dan

I'd stay away from BPS and Cabela's. Try www.planetgps.net. I've found that they have the best pricing than any store. Jerry

Jerry,

Thanks for the tip. Any particular brand to buy/avoid? I have near zero knowledge about these things.

Thanks.

Very possible but something to consider are shipping charges. Some companies make it look like a lower price to get the business just to make up the difference on shipping charges which are not revealed until the order is being placed.

In this case I tested a Humminbirg Matrix 17. $180 from Cabelas (as shipping is included in the price) and $176 from planetgps.

Also, planetgps does not carry Eagle fishfinders? Ouch! My recommendation was going to be the Eagle brand. But they do have a much better Garmin selection... many with good instant rebates.

I've found that Lowrance doesn't give the detail as compared to a Garmin, on a GPS, but with fishfinders I'm not sure there's too much difference between brands. The major factor to consider would be the Pixels per price. Always try to get the most Pixels for resolution. I'm using a Garmin 240 on the dashboard and a Lowrance Eagle on the bow, and I like the results with either one. Planet GPS has never over charged myself or anyone that I've heard, on shipping. Jerry

I have a Eagle fishfinder, it's about 6 years old and I have never had a problem with it, I don't fish waters over 15 ft deep, most of the time 6ft or less..If I were to buy a replacement FF I'd get a Eagle Cuda 128 with built temp sensor from BPS for about 80 bucks.. BPS has a Garmin 80 with almost the same features for $89 which looks good too, what I like about the Garmin is the transducer can be mounted on the trolling motor or transom.. I think you have to consider the type water that you will be fishing and go from there... I had one Humminbird, one was enough.. uscgret

Commonly known as "Humming-Turd", if that gives you an idea of what most people think of them. Jerry

Eagle, I have 2 and they're excellent for the cost. I had an old Humminbird for a while and I hated it (Wide Vision) but the Eagle is cheap and effective. I have the FishMark 320 and it rocks, now the 400 is under $200. Look into it. I also have the cuda up front and that's a good one for under $100.
