Counterbalanced Rods
Over the winter I purchased 3 7' MH rods, with the intention of using
them for Jig / texas rig fishing. A friend of mine offered to counter
balance the rods so that with a certain reel on them they would feel
weightless and balance perfect with the rod at 10 oclock. Well he took
3 subpar rods, and made them 3 of my favorites in my boat. I can pitch
further with less effort, the rods are also in a position where I am
ready to set the hook. I didn't think it would make that much of a
difference on a 7' rod (I counter balance all my steelhead rods). The
difference is huge, and every little bit will help. |

| I am amazed. I have a couple 7' Bionic blades along with balance weights.
I tried them with several different weights so they just naturally balance
in my hand, and in the end I decided the extra weight just made them heavy.
I am curious how your balance out in your hand exactly. Bob La Londe

| He told me he had cut the bottom of the cork off, used epoxy to plug it
at a certain point in the blank, then used tiny lead shot, then epoxyed
in a layer, used more shot, and then continued until it balanced
perfectly with that reel. I believe the purist I use is about 9 ounces,
and even if I put a curado on, it seems to balance out well. If you
come up to the NWC I will let you try it out yourself and get your
opinion :-). I had been using a 7' Medium Avid (Outdoorfrontiers rod)
and this POS Fenwick HMX 7' MH IMHO is superior for the application. I
have only used the Fenwick once since it was counterbalanced, and I
really like how it works. |

| I used to weight balance rods. While it does seem to help initially, I
found that using them just plain wore me out after a while fishing with
them. Now, I prefer to make the rods as lightweight as possible. |

| I like Steve's approach, in fact I think the whole theory behind "balance"
in a rod is old-fashioned. Now the good rods are so light that balance
isn't a factor, as most of the weight is in the reels... WW |

| Right, that is why I mentioned I bought sub par rods. I bought 2
Shakespeare INtrepid 7' MH rods, and a Fenwick 7' MH HMX rod. Combined
the 3 rods barely cost me $100. I just needed some rods, and my buddy
made them the best he could for what I paid for them, and IMO the
Fenwick is nicer for the application i use it for than the 7' M Avid I
was using for the same application. Now if I could have swung it, I would have all Loomis rods, but that is
just me. They are so amazingly light, and sensitive, that I would love
to have a whole set, but until that time I will work with what I have.
I guess you would really have to feel the difference in order to see
what I am really talking about. Thanks for the input guys. Chris |

| Normally you would be balancing the rod to a certain reel . If you change
reels on the rod the balance of that rod will be affected. Steve, remember that flippen stick of mine , most thought it to be a
broomstick. Yet I could pitch with it all day. I will if asked balance a
rod, however I also give fair warning that the rod is matched to that
particular reel. And will never feel right with any other.

| Dave, The rod was balanced specifically for a Pflueger Purist. I switched to
a curado , which is suprisingly a half ounce lighter than the purist,
and still balances really well. Oh well, to each his own, maybe it is all in my head :-D Chris |

| Hey Chris, if it feels right to you, then that's all that matters. |

| Chris, that 1/2 oz. may or may not matter. I suspect that if you were to put
that rod and reel on a fulcrum it would balance out at a spot behind where
the Purist reel does. Also you should find it a bit more tip heavy. But as Charles said , "if it works for you"!
