John Boat advice...

Found a guy that's selling a 12' v-hull fiberglass John boat for $300 with trailer. Boat and trailer both look to be ok. Noticed there is a crack that goes along the top ridge of where the motor would be mounted...(sorry, if my description is generic). I'm assuming that this crack will be ok as long as I fix it but not sure what to use to make sure it doesn't split any farther or well...sink during the maden voyage...I was thinking of using a piece of treated 3/8" plywood (cut to fit) to have something to hold the fiberglass together and some sort of epoxy or something to keep the f.g. from splitting anymore and waterproof the whole shabang. Can I also assume that it will be ok for a couple of adults and two small children or would that be pushing the water displacement for a boat of that size??? Or should I just hang it up and wait for a better deal? Other than that It looks ok visually. / / Anthony

12 foot? couple of adults and two small kids might be pushing it. While overloading a small boat with adults is something I do often, I wouldn't do it with the kids. Most boats have a maximum weight capacity listed on them. always have the kids in life jackets and make sure there is at least one for each adult. Otherwise you are sure to get a ticket alwaysfishking

You would probably want to replace, or at least check the wheel bearings on the trailer. As for reinforcing the transom, there are several ways to do that. I wouldn't use plywood myself...maybe some solid hardwood. If you do use plywood, get the marine plywood. What size motor are you planning on using....keep it under the max. recommended for that boat. 2 adults and 2 kids would be at the upper limit for that boat...depending on weight, check the weight capacity on te manufaturer's plate, should also have the motor size recommendation also. Jon boats have some handling charachteristics that are different from "V" hull boats, especially in rough water...get a good feel for it before loading the kids up.

Have FUN!

What size > motor are you planning on using....keep it under the max./ / I was only planning on getting a trolling motor or two in the beginning since i'll only be using it on the reservoirs and small lakes (most of which won't allow gas powered motors) here in the North-Western Maryland area. Down the road i'll probably get a small hp gas motor but untill then it'll just be trolling speed. I know the batteries and motor will add to the weight and that's something to consider as well./ / / Anthony Anthony

Anthony I say leave it alone, and find another boat. If the crack is across HankCoen

Sounds a little small to me for 2 adults and 2 kids. The damage you describe also concerns me.

I'ld consider paying a little more for something just a little better suited to your application.

Here is a listing of some new aluminum jons from Waco. You may even be able to get some discount from a local dealer. I know Direct Boats sellls most for under list via their website. Boats http://www.wacomfg.com/1432.html Prices http://www.wacomfg.com/aloha_pricelists/rivetjons/rivetjonsengine.pdf

Here are some from Tracker Nitro: http://www.trackerboats.com/segment/index.cfm?fuseaction=segment.list&nav=15 Look at the Topper 14 near the bottom of the page.

Two tyhings come to mind. Price isn't everything. If it was overlaoding a boat with a couple of knowledgeable informed adults I'ld say fine have fun, but when adding a couple kids to the mix I say get a little bigger boat.

That is a little small for two adults and two children. Look for something bigger.

How ever if you are interested in repairing it look at http://www.transomrepair.com/ http://www.us-boating.net/Transom_Repairs.aspx
