Line for Bass
I have a Shimano Stradic 2500 and a 2 pc 6'6" St Croix Avid medium fast rod
I will be fishing in Saratoga Springs NY in the lakes and ponds surrounding
there. What line would you recommend and a bit about why you choose it?I will be using this rod exclusively because it is all I have so I will use
plastics as well as spin baits etc. Thanks!! Todd |

| I would highly recommend the "P-Line" Fluorocarbon in about the 6lb test
range. The water up there is clear and this line is nearly invisible in
clear lakes. It has a VERY low memory and is plenty strong. If you want
above 6lb test line, get the "P-Line" green box, (I'm having a brain fart)
I can't remember the other name of the type of line. I am sold on the
P-Line, it has performed very well for me. I would imagine with the 2500
series, you would be looking at 6-12 lb test with that. The lighter the
line, the better up there. I used to fish the Niagara River and the Finger
Lakes and I envy you, it's beautiful country up there! Regards, Doug |

| Personally if I had one rod for many different applications I would use
a light braid like a 4/12 or 6/20 and then just join a fluoro leader for
certain situations. That way you get the sensitivity, and you can
attach a leader for clear water situations. Chris |

| I went to flouro line and immediately had breakage problems with any strike
that came near the boat. The no stretch factor seems to have a negative
side. When I join a leader to braid I use mono for just a tiny bit of
stretch FWTW. ken |

| With all due respect guys, what in the hell kind of Fluoro line are you
buying??? As I said, P-Line seems to be the ticket. I texas rig with it, I
drag cranks with it, chuck, flip and snag with it and its VERY rare that I
break off! I pull hard on my hooksets too, if I pull and nothing is there,
I need to take a step backwards.
I use a polymer knot when tying on and I have a G-Loomis IMX 6'6 with a fast
tip, Medium action for my main rod. For general fishing, I don't think you
can beat the P-Line! Of course, if your fishing someplace with some snags
or heavy weeds, or a special circumstance, then yeah, the braid would most
likely be better. But for good all around performance, I love the stuff. Doug |

| Saratoga Lake will require fireline. Lots of veggies in that water. said

| The only place in Saratoga I would use Fireline is in the pads in the
outlet stream. Out on the main lake, the rocks out on Diamond Hill point
are tough enough, but with the zebra mussels, Fireline shreds too easy
when jig fishing, etc. If that reel comes with a spare spool, I'd fill one with 6 lb mono or
fluoro and one with 14 or 20 pound fireline. |

| @trnddc07: > I use a polymer knot when tying on ... Do you mean "palomar" knot? That's a fantastic knot for dealing with
lines that don't do very well with other types of knots, and that might be
the reason you're not having breakoffs. Also, most of my experience with
flouro is with fly tippet, less than 4 pound test, with a line-to-line and
line-to-hook connection. Palomar knots don't work very well on size 18
flies. Knots aside, the breakdown rate will always be a problem. While most
people here aren't the kind of idiots that wouldn't hesitate to leave a
half spool of snarled fishing line on a lake shore, other types of lines
break down much faster. If all the benefit of the flouro is right at the
bait, why not just use a flouro leader?? Scott |

| I used to have breakage problems about 3 years ago with Vanish, it is
complete garbage and I will not use it again. Since I switched to
Seaguar I have had zero breakage problems. Chris |

| Thanks for all the info guys. I think I will try to get a spare spool to
have some 6LB Flour and some Fireline on the other so I am ready for all
circumstances. TR |

| Personally, I love P-Line but I'd go to 8 lb or 10. My club just had two
tournaments up there about a month ago and every man pulled a limit both
days (16 anglers, a club record). I was sick and I missed it! Anyway, lots
of 2 to 4 pounders and it seems they were mostly just outside the weed-line.
I don't think we have one guy who fishes 6 pound test anything. Mostly 10
pound and they were culling all weekend. Some guys had over 30 bass a day.
10 pound P-Line would be fine I think. Rich P P.S. It never hurts to have some braid to throw into the messy stuff. |

| Pleasure fishing and fishing for money are 2 different things. If I was
competing, I would most likely throw 10lb P-Line too. For clear water and
pleasure fishing, a good 6 lb line is ideal! In MY opinion anyway! Doug |
