Fought the heat
It was 76 degrees when I got up at 4:45 this morning, with a predicted
high of 99 and a chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. I think it was
too humid to rain. Me and a friend grabbed a trolling motor and battery
and went to another friends private lake, about 20 acres. We loaded the
boat as it got light enough to see, and found the water was so hot
there was steam rising off of it at 76 degrees air temp! This place is
so full of salad that if you ALWAYS take a paddle, no matter how good
your trolling motor is. It looked like the lake was turning over, it
didn't stink, but anywhere the salad didn't reach the surface you could
see all kinds of stuff suspended in the water. The fish didn't want to
bite anything, and we tried most of the tackle boxes. We finally found
a corner that was a little clearer than elsewhere, and each boated one
nice one. Here's mine:

We were glad to get them, cause it was getting hot quick with almost
no wind, and we didn't want to go home smelling of skunk. My best catch
of the day, though, wasn't a fish. Back in May, I was fishing out there
with a group, and one of them was looking for crappie. He gave me some
minnows, and I put one under a bobber to keep him out of the salad. No
rod holders, so I laid the rod over the transom and stuck the rod
handle under the back seat, and THOUGHT I set the rod to freespool
while I started tossing a topwater on another rod for bass. Something
big took my rod and reel before I even knew I had a bite. Well, today I
was close to that spot, and I spotted my bobber a couple of feet below
the surface. I was regretting the fact that I had used 10lb Cajun Red
on that rod, but I needn't have worried. After pulling up S L O W L Y
about 25# of salad, we got my rod and reel back. I feel good about
getting it back, but as hard as that fish had to have pulled to get
that rod out from under the boat seat, I think maybe I'd rather have
the fish! |
