Jeremy's Day Out
I met Jeremy a while back ago this year fishing out on one of my favorite
lakes here. I see this long haired skinny freak of a man fishing minnows under a bobber
with a light trout rod. Well we got to talking a bit and he was real
interested in learning more about bass fishing with artificial baits. It
wasn't long before we got together and hit the lakes. Over the past month
or so, he has taken to fishing like kids on candy. Watching how I rig up,
how I fish and what techniques to use and when. He eventually upgraded some
of his gear, nothing fancy just a stiffer rod and a slightly better spinning
reel. I also gave him an Ugly stick combo I had that I really never used
anymore. Then it happened. Jeremy started catching bass, some good some
small but none the less, he was catching bass on things he never thought
would catch bass before. Well the other morning we were out fishing and it was still dark. I set
the hook into a fish and it jumped and spit it. It looked like a decent size
bass. Jeremy then set his hook and just sat there, I asked if he had one and
he said he wasn't sure. Well that lasted about 2 seconds when his line took
off. I grabbed the net and we couldn't see anything but we knew he had a big
fish. It ran under the boat 3-4 times before coming back up, it was a big
fish, Bigger than anything he had caught in his lifetime. Then it happened.
It dove again and snap, The fish was gone. He was heartbroken, but
determined to get a big fish before the lakes freeze. Fast forward to this morning, we head out at 5:30 a.m into the dark, no
bites for the first half hour or so until we got over to my favorite part of
the lake..The bridge. We fished it and I immediately pciked one up in the
2-3 pound range. He boated a dink shortly after. Fish were busting baitfish
all over but we couldn't get another taker. We head under the bridge and we
were fishing some laydowns and Jeremy sets the hook. Fish on I ask?????
Yup, feels like a decent fish. He grabs the net and lays it on his lap. I
see the fish come up and what a fish, easily over 5 I think. I grab the net
off him and the fish dives, only today Jeremy has the drag set and line goes
out. He reels and pumps and gets the fish on the side of the boat. I reach
over and net it. Big fish, real big fish, familiar looking, hey I caught
that fish last week!! Look at the markings on the tail and fin, yup, same
fish. He was ready to call it quits right there figuring there was no way he
would get anything better. He was right. I managed 1 more in the 2 pound
range and he caught 3 more including a 3 pounder. Couldn't get that smile
off his face all morning. The best part is he is passing it all along to his
kids. Picture at a.b.p.f |
