My new Fast Cat rig is ordered!!!

Well, it has happened!!!

I'm getting the FastCat C20. After talking with a couple other boat manufacturers, as well as other FastCat owners, I've decided to take the next step and get one of the little rascals.

After talking with Jerry, the president of the company, I am now the Wisconsin sales rep for Fast Cat Marine and there's talk of more to come in the not too distant future!

The FastCat owners that I've talked to have been more than impressed with the fishability, as well as it's rough water capability. I've been told that the storage is huge, which I need, and that they're a very comfortable, dry riding and FAST boat.

We'll find out more when I get down to Miami later this month to meet with the owners of the company and to drive these little rascals. There's one boat down there that has twin 300 hp Merc's on the back and they're going to let me drive it!!! I've been told that they've hit 118 mph with it. That's something I've always wanted to do with a boat, drive into the triple digits and now I'm going to do it. How cool is that?

I'm getting the boat rigged with a fair amount of cool stuff, a Merc 250 XS, Lenco Trim Tabs, stereo and all the other goodies as well. The list of goodies is fairly extensive and I'm getting the trailer upgrade as well, seeing's I put a lot of miles on a trailer.

With some reservation, I'm putting a MotorGuide 105 pound thrust, 36 volt trolling motor on it as well, the digital model with depth track, shore track and that kind of stuff. I don't know if this is a good thing, but no one responded here or on the other locations that I posed the question, so I called a couple of service centers for MotorGuide.

The report that I got was that this series of motors is doing very well but they all cautioned me that the more complex the motor is, the more likely it is to have something go wrong. I knew that before I ever picked up the phone! Both places said that they haven't been seeing them come in for repair for the same thing consistently, and that a lot of engineering had gone into upgrading the systems after MotorGuide bought PinPoint Trolling Motors. I loved my PinPoints, so hopefully this new TM will be as good or better.

So now it's fly to Miami, run the boats and see what color I want to have them build the boat in.

OK then, fishing boat it is, but I don't know how you expect to catch fish traveling 100+ mph. :-)

Sounds exciting, I hope it brings you fun and profit. My mid-life crisis consisted of two years as a trout bum in the mountains of Montana. Plenty of fun, but no profit. ;-)

Sounds great Steve, some day I hope I have the good fortune to fish from the back of it with you! But waiting for a new toy to be delivered is tough....hope ypu can stand the anticipation :)! I ordered a new sports car while I was in Europe one time....took 3 months for it to get shipped back to the states, almost couldn't stand it! <grin> Congrats on the "deal"...and have fun down in Miami!

LOL, it's easy. First of all, the boat won't go 100+ mph, it'll only run in the mid-80 mph range. But, I figure it like this, the less time I spend traveling from Point A to Point B, the more time I have to fish both Point A and Point B, plus it'll give me enough time during the day to get to Points C, D and possibly even E!!!

Two years as a trout bum in the mountains sounds fun too! Believe it or not, I do appreciate the quiet sports too and love the mountains.

Hopefully this arrangement with Fast Cat will prove profitable for both of us! Now, when I'm spending time talking to people about my boat, I might be able to make a little $ at the same time!!!

OOOHHH that HURT!!! Well, it might be a mid-life crisis, all I have to do is live to be 96! :-) Some days, I'm surprised I've made it this far! Oh well, every day that I wake up, I set a new personal best in number of consequtive days lived! Steve

Oh I fully know that feeling. I went on safari to South Africa last July, had one of the best times of my life! Between my son, my camera man and myself, we have 15 animal hides and skulls coming. I still don't have them and they have to go to the taxidermist yet! The wait is maddening for me there too!

Thanks and you can rest assured that I'll somehow manage to have fun in Miami.

BASS/FLW guys wont touch anything but Triton & Ranger now, not with all the incentives etc. I'm in the market for a new Ranger myself, doesn't make sense to get anything else if you fish FLW.

No. Right now, and it's kind of hard to tell from the pictures on the website, the front deck extends from the bow back roughly 6 1/2 feet. The console is kind of a center console design with a seat/storage in front of the console, with room for someone to put their feet between the seat and the deck.

Even though everyone tells me that I'll not be able to fill the existing storage, I thought it would be nice to have the deck extend all the way back to the front of the console, eliminating that seat in front of the console and have additional compartments underneath that extended deck. Decks of this nature are often times called flipping decks.

I'm not worried about passenger seating though. As it is now, I'm ordering the model with a bench seat that will fit me and two clients behind the console.

Yeah, but just because I wouldn't want one, that doesn't necessarily mean that others wouldn't. Most jet propulsion systems are notoriously inefficient and I wouldn't want to lose speed. Steve

You have to do what you have to do. Steve

Some like it, some don't. All I know is that no one has said that it wasn't striking! Personally, I like the style. One thing's for certain, it's not a cookie cutter boat looking like others! Steve
Feb 4
We'll be getting in on the afternoon of the 22nd, and leaving the morning of the 25th. You gonna be down there? If so, we should hook up. I have your cell phone number, if you're down there, I can call you and we'll get together for a barley pop or two. Steve

And BE SAFE if they cut you loose on that 118mph model...lol I've been 90mph in a (not my) bass boat, and 75 on my (seriously souped up) Jet Ski....and those were plenty fast for me. ;-) On the water anyway, I don't mind triple digit speeds when there are tires under me. Yeah, I know, just what I needed was another job. Now, I can add sales rep to the resume of firefighter/emt/haz-mat tech, guide, rod builder, writer, editor, website support, television producer, show host, husband, father, and grandfather.....

I figure this should be a no-brainer for me. People were always stopping and talking to me about my Cobra, now I'll just have another reason to chat with them. A Fast Cat owner I talked to in Ohio told me to plan an additional 15-20 minutes each time I fuel the boat! :-)

Steve

As soon as the break-in period is over, you bet!!! Steve
Feb 2
Thanks Charles. Heck, I'll even let you drive it if you want. AND, I've been told that this boat will turn even better than the Cobra! Steve
Feb 2
You won't have to talk me into it at all. Come on up and give it a drive, you're more than welcome and it's part of what I'll be doing now. From all reports that I've heard, both directly and indirectly, it's an awesome boat. I've been told that it's dry riding and capable of 70 mph in 3 footers! I can't wait to try that. Steve

Breakin period? You mean you aren't putting an E-Tec HO on it? Bob

Oh yeah, it has those too! Steve
Feb 3
Think about it Charles. This boat has a 102 inch beam and two keels to carve the water, I think it'll corner like a demon! Steve

Feb 3
Is this a fishing boat we're talking about ? I mean it's startin' to sound like the classic little red sports car of mid-life crisis fame. LOL ! ;-) Ken
Feb 3
Congrats Steve!

I don't know too much about this boat...but I do know that sometimes we get hamstringed in our thinking of what our high performance fishing boat has to be. People who experiment often run across a better way of doing things...and I hope thats what you find here!

BTW, I seen a review of this boat at: http://www.bassandwalleyeboats.com/output.cfm?id=943291

It appears that this boat has a shallow draft? that might make it work well with a jet engine setup...especially for guys who run shallow waters on a regular basis. If you get a chance, see what you can find out in that area...as it might be a potential market for em'.

The other thing I was thinking was whether many could live without carpet (ie. commercial fishermen often do, anyone who makes a real mess in their boat after each outing) and thinking that many would still want to carpet the predominant areas where you stand to fish.

Lastly, before you go down to Miami and drive that dual engine Fast Cat boat that will take you into triple digits...you might just want to get your pilot's license first...bc that light of a boat just might lift up and take-off like an airplane!

Yes, this is a fishing boat we're talking about. And I suppose there might be a little mid-life crisis involved, but I don't think so. I've always been a performance nut and a bit of a speed freak. I've always had fast cars with big engines, I used to race motocross and enduro and I've just continued that with boats.

But from everything I've heard and read about the boat on other sites, it's a fishing boat!

Steve
Feb 4
***I saw that too, and it helped in my decision. Steve
Feb 4
Warren,

I was told that it was unlikely that I'd fill all the available space. They don't know me very well. We'll find out. I know one thing that they've begun working on is a boat with a full flipping deck. Once they do this, and put additional storage under the added deck space, there'll be even more!

And, they've told me that if I want, I can have the first flipping deck model to roll out the doors! Unfortunately, that won't be until 2007 and I don't think that Doc will wait that long for his boat.

Everyone that I've talked to that runs one of these boats brags non-stop about how great the boat handles big, rough water and how smooth and dry it is. We'll find out when I go to Miami, and I do have some big water to run up here, Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

You're welcome to fly on out to Wisconsin anytime after I have the boat and the ice is off the lakes. I'll take you out for a test run and let you drive it too!

Steve
Feb 4
It's not the world's greatest website, but they do have one. It's at http://www.fastcatmarine.com . Actually BassCat was one of the other boat companies that I was talking to, but FastCat made me a much better offer and since I first read about FastCats in Bass & Walleye Boat magazine, I've been intrigued by the concept of a cat hull. Steve
Feb 4
I thought about the Verado. Unfortunately they're very pricey and for resale purposes, I decided to go with a Mercury 250 XS. This way I can sell the boat to BASS/FLW type guys if I decide and not have to worry about the 250 hp restriction. I was actually considering a 275 Verado or the 300 X from Mercury, but practicality (?) reared it's ugly head.

This new boat, the FastCat C20 is a 20 foot boat and I've been told I should be able to run in the mid-80's easily. 60 is my usual cruising speed.
