Finally Some Topwater Action
Last year all spring and summer long I had good topwater action in the
evenings on the river. This year it has been sporadic until yesterday.
Here's my fishing report.***
I took another newbie out on the water this afternoon. We started learning
to flip by working the Fisher bank. I managed three 1.5 to 1.8 keepers and
missed two bites. Typical small keeper action. My guest was having some
confidence issues with the concept of flipping so I decided to fish a little
backwater cover with a couple docks in it where I could let him dead stick
some weightless senkos. I had a hard time getting him to really get back
were he needed to to catch fish so I borrow the rod he was using and made
one cast. Bam. Solid 2 pounder. I kept trying to get him to work it, but
again he was having some issues with confidence. Then we headed over to another little back water area, and I tried to show
him how to fish brush pockets and give him the confidence to put his bait
where it needed to go. I caught four fish while demonstrating all decent
fish in the 2 to 2.5 range. Oops. Finally I just started casting and handing
him the rod. He got two fish on but didn't get a good hook set on them. He
handed me the rod once just as a 2+ took it. I set the hook and handed it
back to him. Yeah. He finally boated one. Finally he started getting the
hang of casting where he needed to with the senko. I had a 2.5 blow up and take a senko on top on me so I picked up my popper
rod and started working the area. It was a pretty solid topwater bite with
me catching another 10 bass from 2 to 3.5 pounds and a 7 inch blue gill.
Some of the fish I caught on the popper hit it three times before I could
hook up. They were pretty aggressive. I think all together from 6:00 until
we headed in I caught about 18 keepers, one short, and one bluegill. My
newbie got atleast three bites, and managed to reel in one fish. FINALLY got into some of that evening topwater action I have been looking
for this summer. Bob La Londe
